It was my haven not only because it was a church and that was the original purpose of such places, but also because my grandpa was the pastor, my grandmother ran the after-school programs and my father was the mayor so it was just as much his stage as his parents’.Ī seven-year-old girl just does not expect to be shot in the parking lot of a church, holding the hand of her mother on one side and her father on the other, her grandparents waving from the open door as parents picked up their young children from after-school care.īesides, I was unusually mesmerized by the sight of a man driving slowly by the entrance to the church parking lot. It sounded to my childish ears like a giant popping a massive wad of bubble gum. I was too young to realize what the pop meant. Borrowed from the 2010 graphic novel “Sandcastle” by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters, it’s the sort of unsettling idea that can trigger a wave of existential anxieties (and/or parental ones, which are often the same thing) just by thinking about it.Īnd yet Shyamalan’s very silly new movie - his best since “The Village,” but still a pale imitation of the slow-burn psychological thrillers that once earned him modern history’s most iconic Newsweek cover - isn’t nearly as fraught-provoking as its nature would suggest. Night Shyamalan’s “ Old,” a go-for-broke “Twilight Zone” riff about a family who find themselves trapped in a sandy enclave where time passes so fast that a six-year-old in the morning will go through puberty by lunch, and a grandmother in the first act has almost no chance of being around for the third. However, I did enjoy how Claudia was very loyal to her friends and wanted them all happy. While she might have been kind and never let anyone take advantage of her, there are many other characters in novels just like her. In all honesty, there was nothing special about her. I laughed at all the right moments and rooted for a good handful of the characters.įoolish Hearts followed Claudia, who was a typical character. I have found that I do not enjoy the characters or the romance in them, but Foolish Hearts was a light and sweet read that I managed to read in a single sitting. As Claudia’s world starts to expand, she finds that maybe there are some things worth sticking her neck out for.Īdmittedly, I am not one to read contemporary novels too often.
